Daz3d are giving children away
Apr 14th
Don’t tell Madonna!
Over at DAZ3d, the long awaited Kids figure has been released, and it’s for free! It’s going to stay free forever (or at least 2019), and you can grab it right here. While you’re at it, get the Toddler morph too – that’s the Weekly Freebie. If you snarf the Cherub Wings that are Renderosity’s Monthly Freebie too, you’re all set for rendering…. well, Cherubs, I guess.
The Base Kids4 Figure is excellent with better joint handling that Michael 4 and Victoria 4 (no underarm problems!) and both boy and girl face morphs and textures. There’s no included pre-built facial expressions but there’s more than enough raw morphs to create some wonderfully child-like expressions. I like.
Where the Kids4 figures stand out is that you can use it with the Figure Mixer in DAZ Studio. Add a Kids figure to a scene with another 4th Generation figure (Michael, Victoria, FREAK, Hiro, Aiko, etc) then go to Edit->Figure Mixer to blend the two. The end result is one figure that can morph between the two – meaning you can have any age range from Toddler (with the freebie above) up to fully grown, for any figure. Mind if I say woot? Woot!
Here’s a quick example – the figure on the left is a Figure Mixed Kids4/Michael 4 set to .25 Kid, .75 Michael to create a very passable teenager. Add one Michael 4 on the right as a proud father for height comparison, and we’re done.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to create an unholy Toddler/FREAK cross.
Remember folks: guns don’t kill people. Babies with guns kill people.
DAZ3d Freebie of the week: Fantasy Firearms
Mar 30th
Oh gods in heaven YES!
This set comprises three weapons – the Dragon Blunderbuss I hastily rendered above, a Lion Arquebus and a wonderful Winged Arquebus that’s perfect for gunpowder-using Paladins everywhere. They’re Figures rather than Props but autoload into position for a figure’s right-hand. Just Conform to the Right Hand, and you’re good to go. It’s a shame there’s no poses included but I’m sure they’ll be coming, Real Soon.
I love ‘em!
Grab them here before it’s too late.
Renderosity Freebie of the Month: Battle Cat Armour!
Mar 3rd
From the good folks at Renderosity and the talents of Powerage comes this awesome set of armour for the Millenium Big Cat!
Ok, they’re calling it the Big Cat Armour but we all know what they mean, right? Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve a certain He-Man to render. His pet is getting lonely.
All together now:
By the Power of Greyskull!
Next: Giant Riding Chickens. No, really.
DAZ3d Freebie of the Week: Arcane Archery!
Mar 2nd
Last week we had Spears, and this time it’s bows and arrows. The free Arcane Archery set gives us three different styles of bows and matching arrows smart-prop’d to Michael 4 or Victoria 4.2, all primed and ready to go. There’s even an upper-torso pose for M4 included too – not one for V4.2 though I suspect the M4 one would work fine with minor tweaking.
It doesn’t get more Endday Campaign than this.
DAZ3d and Renderosity Freebies of the Week
Feb 5th
Wow. I’m stupidly late posting about these this time around so if you want ‘em, you better be quick! The Renderosity freebie thankfully stays free forever, but the DAZ3d freebie reverts to back non-free when the next weekly freebie hits the shelves (usually on a Tuesday) so best to grab ‘em both right now just to be sure. They’re well worth the time to download, folks!
The good folks at Renderosity comes this Little Double Bow Dress. Free clothes are always welcome, and free spangly clothes doubly so. If you don’t like the bows there’s morph dials to size them down, or just set the Opacity in the Shader to hide ‘em completely. Add one leather texture and that hot party dress is now an elven smock. Me, I like the spangly, though I’m sure it wouldn’t suit me at all. Perfect for those renders of girls who dream they were away from the urban grey.

Meanwhile, over in the DAZ3d land there’s a free set of Magical Containers! They’re just what you need for a Wizard’s study or Evil Stepmother’s secret lair.
Scale them up and you’ve bottles and containers galore for capturing little pixies and sprites. In fact, combine these two freebies together, and…….
Till next time!
DAZ3d Freebie of the Year!
Jan 19th
January isn’t even over yet, but I’m declaring a Freebie of the Year already. What gives?
Well, I’ll tell you. For a while the good people at DAZ3D have had their latest generation figures (Victoria 4.2 and Michael 4) available for free. That makes perfect sense as it promotes their latest models, morphs & clothing and is a great way to get started using the best and newest new figures on the market. Anything else, you had to pay for – well, except for the regular weekly freebies, the freebie archive, other free stuff from DAZ, Renderosity, Sharecg and a ton of other great sites. But apart from that, everything else you have to pay for.
That can get pretty expensive, quick, especially if you want to use an older figure. There’s a whole load of great content out there for Victoria 3, FREAK, David and Michael 3, for example, but if you need to buy the figure just so you can use the clothing, that’s an additional cost. There’s also the children Third Generation figures which haven’t yet been updated into the Fourth Generation line (soon, we’re assured).
There’s also figures which are a veritable slice of history just as The Girl, Stephanie or the original Aiko. Again, if you want to work with the figures which got this whole CGI industry started then it’s more cost.
Back with the Fourth Edition figures and we have Aiko 4, Girl 4 and FREAK 4. These are all unique and very different to Vicky and Michael, but they’re based on the same two models – effectively they’re morphs rather than full figures in their own right. If you want those, it’s yet more cost.
Oh yes, this hobby sure can get very expensive real fast.
Not any more.
DAZ3D in their infinite wisdom have released EVERY SINGLE ONE of their base models, for free. Every. Single. One. Not just the latest figures, but all the lot right back to the dawn of time. There’s Victoria 1, 2, 3 and 4. The Reduced Resolution models (great for crowd scenes!), iconic Girl & FREAK and even the latest Fourth Generation version of FREAK, Aiko and The Girl. That’s easily over a thousand dollars worth of models, all for nowt.
Some of these figures I’ve been hanging my nose over for ages, and just are not available from anywhere else. With all these figures to work with, I’m going to be a Very Happy Bunny for a long time to come. Expect renders, Real Soon!
Wow.
That’s an overwhelmingly good freebie, don’t you think :D
What are you waiting for? Go get ‘em!
UPDATE: Now with added She Freak for V4, for free!!
DAZ3d freebie of the week: Shields ho!
Jan 13th
From the ever talented Valandar comes this set of Fantasy Shields, all smart prop’d and ready for use by Michael 4 – which means it’s also good for Hiro, FREAK and all the rest too! There’s just one set of textures for each shield design but they’re of excellent quality and it should be an easy matter to create your own designs.
Got to love the celestial and demon shields!
Just what every well-equipped Paladin needs :D
Renderosity Freebie of the Week: Doll for V4
Jan 6th
Hot on the heels of the DAZ3d newsletter comes the latest one from the good people at Renderosity, and this one comes with an extra-special freebie: a complete character for Victoria 4!
Meet Doll.
Doll (hate the name!) comes with full head and body morphs (which require the Morphs++ pack), textures and a range of make-up and eye colours. Even better, this freebie includes full DAZ Studio MATs too so it works wonderfully right out the box in your favourite 3D rendering app. That’s unusual for any Renderosity product (free or otherwise) and is hoperfully the shape of things to come.
I rendered her in these image using just a standard UberEnvironment light set to high-res but the Occlusion Samples pumped to 128 (my standard portrait light setup). Add the 3Dream’s free Boy Hair, and she’s good to go.
Download Doll here, y’all.
DAZ Freebie of the week: Office Desk Supplies!
Jan 5th
When it comes to the world of 3D rendering, Boring Stuff is Good Stuff. That’s because it’s all too easy to fall over the mountains of “clothing” (I use the term loosely) for the half-naked fantasy female, and while women’s clothing and hair outnumbers their male counterparts by at least 20 to 1, good decent day-to-day propstuff is even harder to come by.
That’s why I’m a big fan of Valandar’s creations. They are often the most boring humdrum items ever likely to find their way into your Runtime folder. And I love ‘em because you need the great quality normal stuff to make the unusual elements really stand out. Also, it’s rather difficult to render a simple office scene (for example) if all you’ve got is a Runtime folder full of barbarians and goth hair. Unless your office is full of barbarians and goths, of course.
This week’s DAZ3d freebie is right at the normal end of ordinary – it’s a set of Office Desk Supplies including pens, pen holder, Rolodex, in-tray, stapler and hole punch. Yeah, boring stuff – but essential boring stuff. Perfect!
The pen is mightier than the…. uhhhh… Stapler. Monster. Thing.
