Update yer bookmarks me hearties!

Greywulf’s Lair has moved! In preparation for the sale of Microlite20 (more on that, another time – and I’m still accepting offers, folks) I have spent some time this Sunday migrating the ‘Lair back to http://greywulf.net.

Thanks so some clever under-the-hood trickery all existing links should automatically redirect from the old site to the new, but you will need to update your RSS feeds to the new location to continue picking up the feeds. I think. Or maybe they’ll auto-redirect too. I dunno. Best to update your RSS anyhow, just to be sure.

There’s still a few things to fix – mainly putting in my lovely list o’links back in as they didn’t make the migration for some reason – but all appear to be up and running just fine. Unless you know otherwise – if you see any problems, please shout out.

If anyone is interested, I’ll write a post all about how to migrate a Wordpress blog across domains and servers while still retaining link integrity. It’s pretty cool if you like that kind of thing.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need a hammer and some more nails.

Welcome to 2010!

Goodbye MMIX, hello MMX.

Wishing you all a very Happy New Year and another 365 days of fun, joy, laughter and chocolate-coated puppies (they’re my favourite).

The decorators are in

Just a day tearing down the Christmas theme and hunting for a shiny new one to bring in 2010. Don’t mind me.

Talk among yourselves :D

When laptops explode

Well ok, it didn’t quite explode, but let’s face it – “when laptops suddenly stop working in an anti-climactic manner” isn’t such an eye-grabbing blog title, is it?

In short: I rebooted my laptop, it didn’t want to. I’ve one hefty corrupt hard drive. Ouch. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem – one quick trip into the Recovery CD and we’re away again – except the DVD drive on my battered and much-used lappy hasn’t worked for quite some time.

Solution two is usually to boot from Linux on a USB Pendrive. That’s what I spent a fair chunk of yesterday trying to do. Except the problem is that my USB ports are…. uhh…. intermittent. Did I mention this laptop is battered and well-used? Yeah. That thing.

So here I am using the same laptop without the harddrive thanks to the wonder that is Damn Small Linux and UNetbootin. 50Mb download, onto a pendrive and I’m in. Add one shared network connection through Christa’s desktop machine (my wifi doesn’t work in DSL) and we’re rolling again. As DSL is entirely resident in memory when it’s up I can remove the pendrive and know it’ll stay up and running just fine. It’s blazingly fast too. I love DSL – easily one of the best versions of Linux ever made.

No new renders from me until I get a replacement laptop though, but that should be Real Soon.

Later, folks.

Now it's your turn to bring on the horror

Churning out a horror(-ish) themed render a day is fun, but today the brain juices aren’t quite flowing as they should.

So, I’m going to hand the floor over to you, gentle reader. Suggest a horror image you’d like to see and I’ll pick one (or more) and make it. Want to finally see the stuff of your nightmares up close? Think you’ve got what it takes to come up with something really scary? Now’s your chance to shine!

Bring on the horror!!

In the Works

Lots of things running through my head, it’s just a matter of making time to put pen to paper. Or should that be pixel to…. uhhh pixel. I dunno. Whichever. Either way, here’s a list (as much for my use as yours) of what’s coming up on the ‘Lair over the next few days. Hopefully.

  • Long Term Test: 4e D&D. In which ol’ Greywulf waxes poetical about how he learned to love Fourth Edition. Find out what’s great (and not so great) about the latest version of D&D.
  • Long Term Test: Mutants & Masterminds. I think it’s the best role-playing game ever made, but what makes it so good, and why aren’t more of you playing it, dammit? Let’s talk about it.
  • There’s no Endday this week due to a missing player so instead we’re going to crack open Dungeon Delve. I’ll let you know how we get on!
  • The next DAZ Studio tutorial – this one is about Cameras, and how to use them effectively.
  • A full review of Alpha Omega: The Encountered. Oh yeah!
  • The trouble with Teleport. Why Teleportation sucks in 4e D&D, and what to do about it.
  • A sneak peak behind the scenes of the Endday Campaign. It’s like a backstage pass into my mind. Could get messy.
  • Lots more Horror-themed renders on the run up to Halloween because they’re such good fun to make.
  • And much, much more!

So, that’s the plan. The question is what should I tackle first, and what interests you the most?

Over to you, gentle reader.

Blog probs

Short and sweet: Something ate all my categories and tags on all posts – about 3,000 of them! Possible database corruption. Looking into it now. Expect much strangeness.

Back soon!

UPDATE: Dare I say it’s fixed? Let’s find out!

Theme change day at Greywulf's Lair

I has new theme. Like it?

This is the rather lovely Lothlorien theme by Karen Blundell, so all kudos and credits goes to she. It’s three-column without being fussy or over-crowded, and fantasy rather than corporate. Good stuff.

Themes are tricky beasts at best. 99% are meh, and the remaining 1% are used by everyone else. It’s rare indeed to find one that appeals to reader and writer alike; I, for example, much prefer a simple minimalist one-column layout with no sidebars whatsoever. This emphasises the important stuff – the content. Readers on the other hand prefer a helping hand. They like to see their names in the Recent Comments, and their own blog in the Blogroll. Categories and tag clouds provide nagivation and context to the blog, and the sidebar is the place to link directly to the most popular pages on your site. Sidebars given customer friendliness.

So, it’s a balancing act between what I like, and what you, gentle reader, want.

I hope this one finds approval.

Coming up: Another DAZ Studio tutorial (layering renders in Photoshop!), and a rather special RPG Week begins on Monday.

And I still want to know why the Chainmail Bikini Pirate is angry. Closing date is 16th May!

Coming soon

She’s ba-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ck!

thereturnof

It’s been almost a year since she last made an appearance on my blog, but Lynn Ux, Geek Girl to the stars is coming back!

While we’re talking about “soon”, expect the next RPG Week to begin next weekend, and it’s going to be a biggie – none other than Mutants & Masterminds! Expect a whole seven days coverage where we take everything from the very basics all the way through to building your own superhero campaign. This is going to be a tricky one to pull off as I’ve said so much about my favourite game already, but I aim to bring whole new goodies to the table.

Stay tuned!

DAZ Studio Toon up

Want to know how to create toon-style images like this in DAZ Studio? ‘Course you do! Stay tooned for the next First Steps with DAZ tutorial, coming….. toon!

Meantime things are slowing down a little here at Greywulf Towers as I’m fighting off a cold so feel just a little more achy and drained than usual. I’ve a Character du Jour based on benpop’s description of this lovely Elven Maiden to put together, the Sunless Citadel 4e conversion pdf to complete, a couple of commissioned renders to finish and the next panels for Sin20: The Life and Death of Callen Oncedark to…. uhhh…. start. Ouch. I’m so behind!

Instead, I’ll end with a mini-rant.

There’s a lot of noise out there regarding Wizards’ issuing a cease-and-desist order to Ema’s Character Sheets site. I’m not going to be drawn into that because we don’t really know the facts behind it, and to the best of my knowledge never visited the site in question. So it’s not fair for speculate about something I really know nothing about.

However, this has renewed a call for Wizards’ to issue some kind of fan-site policy. I’ll say this only once: I don’t want no steenking fan-site policy, ok? In other industries where these things exist they do nothing but drive a wedge between companies and their fans. Policies like these are anathema to the whole concept of “being a fan” in the first place and only serve to further limit what we, as fans, can or can’t do in our own private corner of the internet. Wizards’ quite rightly pointed out that having a fan-site policy would make no difference in cases where their IP is abused. I’m hoping that they’re coming to realise that having a fan-site policy in the first place is a Bad Move.

And don’t get me started on the whole “Intellectual Property” myth. I’ll save that for another day, ok?

But anyhow.

Your own personal “policy” when it comes to D&D or any other game should be the same as it is on the internet as a whole:

  1. Use common sense
  2. Respect others
  3. Respect the law

Do we really need the specifics spelling out to us? Hell no!

Rant over. Think I’ll lay down now.
