DAZ Studio 4.6 is out now, still free

DAZ Studio 4.6 is out now, still free The latest version of DAZ Studio (my all time favourite render-and-messing-about-in-3D engine of choice) is out now, and the good news is that the Pro version is still 100% completely free. Ok, that’s not the only good news. The real good news is that DAZ Studio is even better than ever, especially if you define “better” as meaning “faster, more stable than ever before and contains a slew of shiny new features to tease your pleasure centres”. Which I do. I’m still working through the new features (full list here) to try them out but three things immediately caught my attention: A 64-bit version that [...]

Neverwinter du Jour: Zanne Silentread

Neverwinter du Jour: Zanne Silentread “Why am I in Neverwinter? Because I have nowhere else to be.” Half-Elves are, by nature, a displaced and homeless people. Neither truly elf nor human they are all too often treated as outcasts of both. Zanne Siltentread is an outcast even among Half-Elves, for she is a Half-Drow. Her mother was a Drow Highborn whose fall from favour led her to the ultimate disgrace – she was sold to a human slaver. The Drow and the slaver’s relationship travelled a troubled path through loathing to grudging respect and finally love – though this is not their story. Zanne is the result of their tale, and her life has been o [...]

So where were we?

This blog died last week, and I’ll confess I was this close to shutting the darned thing down – to the point where I have a “so long and thanks for all the fish” text file ready and waiting. But instead, I fixed the problem. Corrupt mysql databases are a pain, but easily fixed when you know how. And I do, apparently. This did give me time to pause and ponder where this blog is (or isn’t) going, and where it can be over the coming months. This is where you come in, dear reader. I have blog stats (oh so many blog stats), but they only ever tell a part of the story. What I would love to know is what do you wan [...]

Wheels within wheels

One of the neat things about D&D Next is that many of the Classes aren’t so much Classes in their own right as meta-Classes containing a slew of subclasses inside them. This is solid AD&D-style thinking, but brought bang up to date. It pulls what would otherwise be different Classes in their own right into using the same core mechanics and concepts, but differentiating sufficiently so that each has a flavour all of its own. That’s darned clever, that is. The most obvious example is the Paladin where the character’s Oath dictates whether they are a Cavalier, Warden or Blackguard. In previous editions these would [...]

Flames of WarZ, anyone?

Flames of WarZ, anyone? Flames of War, for those who don’t know, is probably the most popular and widely played WWII-era tabletop wargame currently available. It uses 15mm figures to simulate battles from the Eastern Front to the Saharan desert, from the earliest assaults in Poland to the mighty Late-war battles against a beleaguered Germany. In terms of complexity, FoW is roughly comparable to Warhammer 40k in that the main rules are simple enough to learn in an evening though can take years to fully master, and a fair chunk of the enjoyment comes from building your ‘perfect’ army list, only to have it mercilessly crushed by some lucky know- [...]
