@ Greywulf.
I was speaking about the fact that buggy video games aren't necessarily recalled. The ones I've run into get patched, but you are right about books. Patches don't work in that case.

Sorry I made the whole comment a lot more complicated than necessary.

While I'm not a fan of 4th Edition, I have to agree with pretty much everything you said.

About the only thing I'd add would be continued product support for 3.5e. Since 3.5e and 4e are such different systems, I don't think they'd actually lose anything by supporting both. Those who like 4e would continue, and they'd still get the money from those who are sticking with 3.5.

Of course, I may be alone on that one ;)

@Geek Gazette I'd love you to link. Go right ahead :)

The thing is that you can patch a game; the patch integrates and overwrites the bugs, creating a seamless fix. Not so with a book. Imagine if halfway through a game you had to stop, load another game, play that for a while then go back to the original. That's what "patching" a book is like. Not good. Post-it notes and slipped-in printouts do not a patching mechanism make.

Marketing theory rather seems to be something that passed Wizards' by this time around. Shame that.

Amen!
One of the best posts I have seen on the topic. BTW hope you don't mind if I link to it.
Though I do have to admit the deal with released video games is off, I've had a few where I had to download patches. However everything else is spot on. Most of what you said is taught in basic business classes. Go for the widest demographic possible, tailor the marketing to draw them in (even if that means having multiple marketing campaigns to include different age groups/genders), and most of all place the product where they are likely to find it.

Thanks, guys. Good to see I'm not going (power) crazy here :) King Greywulf the First. Y'know, it does have a certain ring to it.

@Mdonle, why not replace the books for free if they're faulty? With any other book, if it had a printing error I could reasonably expect to be able to send it to the publisher and get a replacement. Why not expect the same customer service from Wizards'? Just asking........
