Subject I need help with…
McAfee? Site Advisor…
I am trying to request a verification file to “prove” I am the owner of the site, yadda yadda… I keep getting this error.
“Error Submitting Site for Verification
It appears that the Web site rbcsoftware.me.uk is returning an HTTP 200 status response code in the header of 404 pages.
We cannot verify a Web site that is configured this way because it allows anyone to verify themselves as the owner of your site. Please update your Web site server configuration to return 404 status codes in the headers for pages that do not exist. Once your site is configured this way then you can return and request a file name verification.”
Now I aint seeing what I’m supposed to do, maybe the answer is simple but I can’t see it, help?!?!

Personally I’ve never liked or trusted McAfee or anything they create, but each to their own, I guess
Check with the folks who provide your hosting. You should be able to set a custom 404.html file which will return the info they require. Normally you can specify it in a .htaccess file in the root directory of your site.
Put something like this in the .htaccess file:
ErrorDocument 404 http/;//www.rbcsoftware.me.uk/404.html
And create a 404.html doc which meets their needs.
Thinking about it, it might work. It might not. What they’re asking for is for the status messages from the webserver itself to report back “rbcsoftware.me.uk” which is unlikely to happen on a hosted service anyhow. How on earth that is supposed to “prove” you own the site, I’ll never know.
Like I said, I don’t like McAfee. I’d certainly not let them anywhere near my computer/website/data.
