Amen brother. I would rate Bodaks as the worst too. We once ran up against a couple of them and they damn nearly killed off half the party. Based on the challenge rating the DM thought it would be an easy fight for us and was unprepared with how deadly they were. So he just sprung them on us and let the chips fall were they may, trusting the CR.
Well, I can tell you that this fight had us to spending lots of time looking up every detail of gaze attacks. We finally settled on the fact that the rules said there was a potential for some of the party members to make TWO death saves a round!
Maybe we were doing it wrong even after all that reading but here is what we determined. On the bodaks turn, anyone who they fix they their gaze on makes a death save. Then, on the parties turn, anyone who attacks them must also make another death save. So some of the front line fighters were having to make two saves a round… or die on the spot. Thats just insane. We were doing this right??? Either way we all agreed, DM included, no more bodaks will ever be used again.

Phew. I’m glad it’s not just me who thinks they’re the worst
I’d suggest that the gaze attack needs conscious effort from the Bodak, so it’s only usable on their turn once a round. In effect, they’re “projecting their hate”, so to speak. Even at once a round though, it’s a nightmare. Imagine a Bodak entering a kobold’s lair. 24 hours later, there’s 200+ of the things streaming out of the cavern and mankind doesn’t stand a chance.
The only way I’d use Bodaks is in some kind of “eternal war with Vampires” scenario where the heroes kill the vampires and open the floodgates to Bodak World. Other than that, they’re off the table.
