While I don’t have any sense of patriotism in my body at all, I have a strange respect for those who do. They believe in a Britain which to me, frankly, just doesn’t exist. One that is “Great”, a supporter of Justice and the Common Man, of glory on the battlefield and cricket, Eton and all that jazz.
I respect them because I wish it was true, and applaud their dreams.
Instead we are a snivelling cowardly nation hiding behind the arrogant bully that is the United States, where wealth trumps justice and we have lost all possibility of glory in war.
But oh how I wish the dreams of the patriot were true.
