I hid in the shadows at the back of the junk store, looking out down a long corridor of broken brick-a-brack, trash and all the unwanted things that make up a life. They had been forgotten, no longer cared for.

I was different. I wanted to be here in the still, quiet place, undisturbed. I found peace amid the books, resting as the dust settled into my covers, coating my inner springs and gnawing at my padding as the days passed. In my mind, I was a regal throne, the books and ancient tables my courtiers. This junk store was my empire.

Then they came to take it all away.
