2005-06-26 Return of the Power Desktop: I know that I rant on and on (and on) about just how great Linux is, yadda, yadda, yadda, but the . . .

I know that I rant on and on (and on) about just how great Linux is, yadda, yadda, yadda, but the more I use it, the more I love the way it works. My habits online have evolved from 20ish years of computing and using the ‘net for pretty much as long as the net has existed. I recall the heady days of the Compuserve dialer, the awe at the raw speed of a 33.6 modem and recall the sheer frustration of the first versions of Netscape.

My daily net use is born from all this, and it’s tempered the way I work into pure minimalism.

I consider Opera and Firefox to be the best browswers around, though the more I’m using this computer, the more I find myself falling back on Links, the terrific text-mode broswer that’s common to every Linux box on the planet nowadays. I’ve just installed another favourite app – snownews, a lovely text-based rss reader that just works; give it an rss feed and it slurps it up, hit R and it refreshes them all up, picking up the new stories for your enjoyment. Pure, unadulterated minimalist joy.

I love vim, slrn, mutt, and all the rest. I prefer a text file to a binary registry any day when it’s necessary to get the old hands dirty, and would rather see green-text-on-black that have to wiggle a mouse about.

That’s why I also like http://www.dodgeit.com. Create an email address on the fly, and it’s there for anyone to post spam at. Then, I can suck it all in via rss into snownews, or these pages, or wherever.

email+rss = killer app.

Nice.
